As the cool air creeps in on us, I’m finding this 1964 album by jazz-folk guitarist Terry Callier suits the seasonal change perfectly. His debut effort, comprised of traditionals and standards, Callier’s soulful approach and billowing voice feels right at home with the increasingly crisp outdoors and the sedative warmth of home. It beckons you to crawl inside.

Perfect for your after-hours weirdness, this 1963 hit from The Jaynetts is said to have at least ten different vocalists featured on it…a wonderfully unique, and perhaps even psychedelic, idea for its time. One also can’t help but ponder the lyric’s possible drug-infused subtext. And the way the layered and cushioned harmonies offer the idea as a form of shelter from heartbreak and despair results in a much richer, and darker, experience than might first meet the eye.

An album I’ve turned to time and time again this summer has been Unknown Mortal Orchestra’s self titled debut. Released on Fat Possum, the record truly hails from beyond, as its collage of myriad influences and sounds culminates in a purely transcendent experience. The band has two upcoming tour dates this month: at Webster Hall on the 14th and Glasslands on the 15th. Maybe I’ll see you at one of ‘em.
